Mead has an enrollment of approximately 625 students in seventh and eighth grades.

Mead received the U.S. Department of Education Blue Ribbon Award for Excellence in Education in 1995. The Illinois State Board of Education also recognized Mead’s high standards as an educational community worthy of emulation. As a school, we embrace the PBIS Behavioral Expectations of Be Respectful, Be Responsible, and Be Safe, which are integrated in many areas of the student’s academic and social/emotional programs.

Strong academic achievement is a priority for the entire Margaret Mead learning community.  Students at Mead are divided into four academic teams and placed with core teachers representing language arts, math, science, social studies and physical/health education. Students have a trimester schedule.

Students are able to choose two class periods for elective or exploratory classes. Exploratories are 12-week courses and may consist of the following:  World Cultures, Study Skills, Media, Art, and Music. Electives are the following full-year courses:  Band, Orchestra, Chorus, Spanish, French, Media and Art.

Our staff is consistently striving to meet the needs of ALL our students. Differentiation is a part of all our academic efforts. The process of differentiation is one way to meet the individual needs of our students; this process challenges us to think about our instructional approaches. As a result, special intervention programs are in place to close the achievement gap of struggling students, while those students that are at benchmark will take advantage of accelerated or enriching opportunities to expand learning in various content areas.

Mead is honored to have the District 54 magnet program within our school for seventh- and eighth-grade students.

Mead students have an opportunity to become involved in a variety of after-school activities, clubs and athletics. Some of the staff-sponsored clubs are Yearbook, Drama, Community Service, Student Council, Chat Room, Mead’s Newspaper, Partner’s Club, Bocce, Irish Football, Improv, Poms and Yoga Club.

Interscholastic sports include cross-country, boys and girls basketball, cheerleading, girls volleyball, wrestling, and track and field. Students may also choose intramural activities that include basketball, ping pong, open gym, and social interaction.

Mead was named after Margaret Mead, an anthropologist known for her studies of how culture influences the development of personality.
