Information about clubs/activities are given during announcements daily to all students. All permission slips and information packets are located in the cafeteria for all to pick up and can also be found linked in the Mead Schoolwide Google Classroom.

Chess Club

All 7th and 8th graders are welcome to join, no matter your skill level—even if you’ve never played before, we’ll teach you! The goal is simple: play chess, spend time with friends, and have fun. Chess Club will meet on Tuesdays after school in Room 221 starting on September 2nd and going until October 7th.

Club Unify is a year-long after-school program that is committed to Respect, Inclusion, and Awareness. Club Unify is a leadership club that has Mead students with and without special needs building friendships, making connections, creating school-wide and community-wide projects and growing on being a Unified Champion School. Club Unify meets once a month and all are welcome!
Cosmetology Club

Cosmetology Club focuses on the study and application of beauty treatments, including hair, skin and nails. Guest speakers from the profession will join us for demos and make and takes. We’ll meet on Thursdays from January 22nd to February 26th in Room 102 from 2:20-3:50pm.
Dissection Club

In this two week club, students will have the opportunity to dissect frogs and fetal pigs to analyze the organism’s anatomy and physiology and compare their findings to understand how the human system works. You must commit to participate in each of the 2 weeks of dissection. One for frogs, one for fetal pigs.

Drama Club is an after-school club established to allow students to work collaboratively with others, build confidence while working on their performing and speaking skills, and share a love for the arts. Drama Club needs a Cast AND a Crew! Drama Club is open to all 7th and 8th grade students!
E-Sports & Game Club

All are welcome at any time! Board games, card games, video games, computer games and more! Popular choices from last year’s game club: The Game of Life, Coolmath Games, Quick, Draw!, Pictionary, Scattergories, UNO, and Jenga. E-sports & games club will run every Thursday from December 4 – March 12.
Fluid Power Challenge

After attending an information workshop that explains the year’s challenge, each team of 4 students will design and build a prototype or model of a fluid and pneumatic powered machine that will accomplish the task set forth. They will also assemble a portfolio of the work they have done to enter the competition. They will use their engineering knowledge and building skills to reproduce the machine they designed on the day of the competition. We will meet on Mondays and Fridays at the end of September.
Frisbee Golf Club

Frolf with us! Frisbee/disc golf is a sport where players throw discs at targets, aiming to complete a course in the fewest throws possible, similar to traditional golf. No experience needed. We’ll meet on Thursdays from August 28th to October 2nd in Room 102 and then walk to the field. Club goes from 2:20-3:50pm.
Garden & Cooking Club

Join us for a year of hands-on fun! The Garden & Cooking Club meets in the fall for 4–6 sessions and again in the spring for another 4–6 sessions. Open to all 7th and 8th Graders! Your duties will include caring for our school vegetable garden beds as well as doing a little native wildflower gardening near the STEM lab.
But that’s not all—you’ll also head into the kitchen! Learn and practice real cooking skills, from knife safety to working as a team to prepare delicious dishes. We will of couse also be sharing different dishes from our cultures!!!
Mathletes

If you like problem solving, working with others on challenging puzzles, and enjoy doing math, then join Mathletes. We meet after school on Tuesdays in Room 212 from January to March. This is a math club in which we train for a district math competition in the Spring. We love math. We talk math. We share our thinking about math, and we represent the great minds here at Mead.

Mead TV is a dynamic, student-run live daily broadcast that showcases the talent, creativity, and teamwork of our students. Each day, the program is streamed to the entire school, keeping everyone informed and entertained with daily announcements, sports, and weather updates. Students can take on both on-air roles and off-air positions. Whether you’re interested in being in the spotlight or working behind the scenes, Mead TV offers a unique opportunity to build real-world communication, production, and leadership skills while having fun and contributing to our school community.

Origami Club

Prairie Partners

The purpose of Prairie Partners is to create an environmental club that establishes and maintains the preservation of prairies and other natural areas in Illinois. Prairie Partners is an after school club that will meet in the Spring at Campanelli Elementary School. Magnet students will serve as Mead Mentors to a group of 20 3rd grade students. Together with the help of Mrs. Lange (Campanelli Sponsor) and Mr. Pfeifer (Mead Magnet teacher) students will learn the importance of community service, native gardening and mentorship.
Rocketry Club

In Rocketry Club, students work collaboratively to learn about and engineer functional rockets, as well as other machines related to rocket physics. Students that have participated in Rocketry club before at their elementary schools will be given more advanced rocket designs to create. Students will have the opportunity to launch their hand crafted rockets at the annual District 54 Rocket Launch in the Spring
Rube Goldberg Club

Rube Goldberg Club is an exciting experience where students will work together to invent a creative machine, using everyday objects, that performs a particular task. The club will meet starting in November and run through the end of February. The club is limited to a maximum team of 12 students. The machine will be showcased at a contest in February at Hoffman Estates High School. All club members are expected to attend this fun event.
Tennis Club

Welcoming beginners or pros! We will develop and grow mechanics, teach basic court positioning for singles and doubles, and learn how to keep score. Participants will engage in technical instruction, fun drills, and competitive games and matches. Bring gym shoes and a racquet if you have one! Tennis club will run every Thursday from April 9 – May 21.
Unified Basketball Club

Unified Basketball promotes social inclusion by joining students with and without special needs on the same team to promote friendships, opportunities, exercise, and fun while playing basketball. Unified Basketball is open to all– it is co-ed and open to both 7th and 8th graders. The team will consist of Special Olympics Athletes, and Unified Partners. The season will run from late November through early March, with weekly practices from 4-5 pm. We will have at least 3 games and will also participate in the Special Olympics Unified Basketball tournament. Students will need their own transportation to and from practices (at Mead) and games (Mead and other nearby schools). Students must have a consent/ permission slip completed and a Special Olympics Medical form filled out by a physician. Students that are Unified Partners must also fill out their “Class A” (https://www.soill.org/class-a-registration/). Please email Mr. Loranger with any questions!

Yearbook Club meets every Monday from November to Spring Break after school in room 223 (Ms. Morrison’s Room). In Yearbook Club, you will design the Yearbook by selecting pictures from school events and creating a layout. Students will use computer design and art skills to create pages. Students will get a chance to take some pictures of clubs and activities during the school year. Yearbook Club is a great way to have fun and socialize with friends. Soccer intramurals are every Tuesday and Thursday and take place in the fall and spring. Whether you have soccer experience or not, come on out and have fun playing. After you get a permission slip signed, you can show up and play! We meet every Tuesday and Thursday in Mr. Hirshfeld’s room 104 after school and then head out to the field together to play till 3:45. Please remember to bring clothes and shoes to play in! Come out and join us!
